Individualized Medicine Conference 2013

By Center for Individualized Medicine

The Individualized Medicine Conference 2013:From Promise to Practice, focuses on how to translate the promise of genomic medicine to your practice. Expert speakers, focused breakout sessions, real-life case studies and a poster session provide opportunities to discover and discuss emerging topics in applied genomics. The Conference will be held at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, MN, home to the Mayo Clinic. At the Conference, you will be able to network with professionals in your field, and learn from the latest clinical case studies and research.

CME and CEUs have been approved for physicians and genetic counselors. Visit the website for more information on how to obtain your continuing professional credits while learning about the latest genomics technologies and methodologies from the international experts who are implementing these techniques into their practice.

Omics 101

This pre-conference course is designed to deliver a professional background on genomics for the patient care professional. Four focused sessions start at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 29, and run until 5 p.m. Space is filing up, so register now to reserve a spot. A complete schedule for Omics 101 is available on the conference website. CME is approved for physicians, and CEUs are available for genetic counselors.

Course Goals
  • Explain the use of medical genomics information in clinical practice
  • Discuss the use of "omics" technology in advancing patient care for diagnostic dilemmas, cancer therapy and drug therapy
  • Identify patients who may benefit from referral for consideration of genomic analysis
  • Distinguish ethical, legal and social issues for patients with diagnostic dilemmas, cancer patients and drug-gene pair applications
  • Discuss the various roles of the health care team necessary in providing genomic-based patient care

Conference goals

  • Explain practical applications for integrating genomics and pharmacogenomics to individualize patient care
  • Discuss strategies to overcome obstacles of implementing genomic sequencing for patient care
  • Discuss how to disseminate genomic information to patients through an ethical, legal and regulatory framework
  • Using cases, apply knowledge learned to discern whether a patient may benefit from whole-genome or whole-exome sequencing
