Gluten Influence on the Microbiome
Recent research has illustrated that the intestinal microbiome plays a major role in the development of Type 1 diabetes. Researchers at Mayo Clinic, funded by the Iacocca Foundation and a National Institutes of Health RO1 grant, demonstrated that gluten in the diet may in fact modify the intestinal microbiome, increasing incidences of Type 1 diabetes.
