Molecular mapping of the heart to predict disease susceptibility

By Susan Buckles Susan Buckles (@susanbuckles)

Vulnerability to heart disease can be projected before symptoms occur, Mayo Clinic discovered in preclinical research. This proof-of-concept study revealed that heart muscle changes indicate who is vulnerable to disease later in life. These changes can be detected from blood samples through comprehensive protein and metabolite profiling. This exploratory mapping, conducted in the Marriott Family […]

Mayo researchers study genetic basis of high cholesterol in adults

By Colette Gallagher Colette Gallagher (@colettegallagher)

In a new study published in NPJ Genomic Medicine, Mayo Clinic researchers found that genetic testing may help identify patients with high cholesterol, or hypercholesterolemia. It also may have implications for the clinical management of patients diagnosed with high cholesterol due to a genetic disorder, or familial hypercholesterolemia. “In our study, we found more than […]

For one patient, sharing her family medical history led to lifesaving care

By Sharon Rosen Sharon Rosen (@sharonhrosen)

When Stephanie Van Doren first visited Mayo Clinic’s campus in Florida, she was seeking care for digestive issues. But after hearing Van Doren’s family medical history and completing a clinical evaluation, gastroenterologist Timothy Woodward, M.D. recognized that she may also be at risk for a potentially fatal heart condition, aortic dissection. Genetic testing confirmed that […]

Can BioBanks Help Close Gaps in Health Outcomes?

By Barbara J. Toman Barbara J. Toman (@barbaratoman)

By definition, personalized medicine requires diversity. One-size-fits-all doesn’t work for every individual, especially members of groups that are medically underserved. In collaboration with Arizona State University and Mountain Park Health Center (MPHC) in Phoenix, Mayo Clinic’s Center for Individualized Medicine has created a biobank to enhance the diversity of Mayo’s medical research. Sangre Por Salud (Spanish for […]

Tool of the trade: researcher applies artificial intelligence to uncover causes, risks for disease

By Sharon Rosen Sharon Rosen (@sharonhrosen)

Some diseases, such as certain breast and colon cancers, are linked to genetic mutations passed down in families. But for many other diseases there are no direct genetic links that explain why the disease develops. That’s why Manolis Kellis, Ph.D. and his team are using artificial intelligence to uncover the hidden cause of disease. Dr. […]

Pharmacogenomics – striving for safer, more effective drugs for you

By Sharon Rosen Sharon Rosen (@sharonhrosen)

At Mayo Clinic, pharmacogenomics – how your genes impact the way you process medications – is helping doctors to take the guess work out of selecting safer, more effective treatment for patients. Mayo researchers have been leaders in developing DNA tests and identifying drug-gene interactions that affect a patient’s response to many medications, such as […]

Precision care for heart disease – a practical approach

By Sharon Rosen Sharon Rosen (@sharonhrosen)

Heart disease can sometimes be a silent killer. Many of us know seemingly healthy people who’ve suddenly or unexpectedly had a heart attack. It can be shocking when people who are at a a healthy weight and exercise regularly die from heart disease that they never knew they had. Many forms of heart disease can […]
